So there is this belief– perhaps I should call it an assumption– that states that human beings are on a sure path on-wards and upwards, that “progress” (whatever that means) will continue, unless determined persons decide to stop it.
But… what is Progress? How do you determine where it should go? Who is in charge of it? Why is it good? What is good, while we are asking? Isn’t it true that if a person can take their lives in one path or another, that forward motion is not necessarily good? Or perhaps what we call forward might actually be backwards? How can you call one action compassionate and the other inhumane when you have no set definition for either?
So, reading all this, you might think I’m a relativist. No. This is a critique of relativism. It does not stand up to it’s own standards. You simply cannot assess anything if you are a relativist. You can’t call anything good or bad, you can’t really even say it is different. Because you have no standards, there is no humanitarianism, no freedom, no causes, no opinions, no facts, no thing, state, object or necessity to work towards. In other words, you simply cannot define progress as a relativist. There is no -ism for anything, because any and all data is invalid, useless, and ultimately a waste of time.
We have forgotten that the original definition of discrimination is the knowledge of the difference between one thing and another. If you do not know the difference between a banana, and the business end of a loaded gun, is that really a good thing?
Just because something is different than what it once was, just because we don’t know anything about what the results will be, doesn’t make it good. Uncharted territory is not an unalloyed good. Change for change’s sake is just… different, and you have no means to determine it’s value one way or the other until you have a set of standards and the right tools, or a means to measure the difference between what you have, and what you might get.
The bottom line is, relativism is a clever means of disarming your frenemy/follower/opponent of reason, skill and knowledge of what is really going on. It is a tool for self-imposed slavery. Most of those who preach relativism don’t really believe it. I say this because they don’t act it. They impose their values on the population, sure that no one will oppose them, because all they have to do is preach more relativism– and call those who disagree with them enemies of Humanity/The State, whatever will set off the fire alarms this week.
After all, they expect YOU to follow what they say, but do not act in concordance to their own ideas… because it is THEY who are the Super Man. You just don’t know what’s good for you, and with relativism–you never will.
This idea of mindless wave of progress that sweeps up humanity and carries him to the promised land is construct– a true opiate– for at least God demands responsibility from his charges. We have a job. That is to love God and one another. We have intrinsic value. We have a reason to be.
Anywhere else, we are only there to serve some one else’s will to power.
