The funny thing about this image is that the artist is really making fun of himself. Sure, our observers do have some goofy looks, but let’s be honest. It’s not silly to be excited or absorbed in seeing something new.  What he’s really doing is thumbing his nose at the artist’s need for gratification.  Look at how serious he looks! How haughty and grim!  Though he titles it “the Amateurs” one gets the sense that is from the artist’s point of view, and he’s an unreliable narrator.  BOOM! Meta-Art.

Come on, you know it’s true.
